Shannon and Adrienne have been best friends ever since they were little. But one day, Adrienne starts hanging out with Jen, the most popular girl in class and the leader of a circle of friends called The Group. Everyone in The Group wants to be Jen's #1, and some girls would do anything to stay on top . . . even if it means bullying others.
Now every day is like a roller coaster for Shannon. Will she and Adrienne stay friends? Can she stand up for herself? And is she in The Group―or out?

My daughter (8) read this in one sitting. She said it was really good, so I read it. I didn't appreciate The 2nd grade character getting kissed by a boy (aggressively while her friend was held back to keep her from stopping him). The girl got mad at The main character for stopping the kiss - she wanted to be kissed. I don't want my 2nd grader thinking those are ok actions to have our accept. The area I found most disturbing was when the character talked about dying to make all the bad feelings stop. I was caught off guard that my 2nd grader had that small little push that maybe that was an ok solution to handling life's problems. Otherwise, I felt like I was reading the script for Mean Girls. If anything, it gave me some talking points to have with my daughter to remind her acting like the girls in the book was not ok and everyone should be included. I'd provably recommend waiting until a little older to read this book and be prepared to follow up with questions/ answers.
This was an Amazon recommendation, and I mistook the cover art for that other series my kid likes. She’s enjoying the book, and showed me some parts she identified with. I think it’s valuable for a girl to know these social problems are so common. But as we’re flipping through, I’m randomly seeing a smiley Jesus in robes whispering to this kid in her times of trial maybe? It’s just not something I expected.
Im a fifth grade teacher and I read this memoir cover to cover in just one sitting! Shannon Hale tells a story that will provide a mirror for so many middle grade readers! From anxiety, to bullying & feeling alone - so many kids will relate! Hopefully, readers will see that they are not alone & that nice friends are out there! Also, don't let kids skip the author's note at the end - meaningful insights that could benefit any reader.Enjoyed so much that I added it to my Mock Newbery 2018 book list. Note: I'm not sure if a memoir can win the Newbery but I know this book is worth sharing & discussing with young readers!
Bought for my middle schooler, who is on the autism spectrum. She read it with her ABA therapy. She and the therapist loved it. Great for middle schoolers struggling with social skills and friendships in a difficult life stage. It examines what the qualities of a good friend are & what the qualities are in someone who isn’t actually a friend. These can be tough to identify for middle schoolers. Saving for my younger daughter to read in a few years.
A neighbor told me about this book bc her daughter struggles with anxiety so I bought it w/o reading reviews. My 10 yr old daughter read it twice before I had the chance to read it with her. I was surprised at all the drama in the story and also to the references to Heavenly Father & Jesus. I want my daughter to solve her own problems rather than pray to a God to "fix her problems". I agree with several other reviewers... I also did not like the talk about wanting to die to makes the "icky feelings" go away. I live in UT where teen suicide continues to rise. The book gave us some talking points but this is not the way I teach my kids. This book is not a keeper in our family library.
Elementary school friendships are not the easiest for Shannon. Especially since her best friend is part of a “group†where some members are not so nice or just down right mean. As Shannon navigates the complicated dynamics of the group, she discovers what type of friend she wants to be and what makes a real friend.REAL FRIENDS is the graphic novel we have been all waiting for. I can see this book being passed around my fifth-grade classroom, just as popular as SMILE and SISTERS by Raina Telgemeier. By the end of the school year, REAL FRIENDS will look worn and well loved. I plan on purchasing multiple copies to keep up with the popularity I know this book will have in my class. I cannot wait for the release of this book. It is a must have for any classroom and school library.
The behaviors of the girls in this book are down-right awful. Mean, catty, and all around unkind. Not the way that young friendships develop. This book is also only potentially suitable for dogmatic Christians; it is inappropriate for kids of other faith systems.
